My name is Melanie and I am addicted to Food & Fitness books!!
I love everything about food, nutrition and exercise and have done for many many years. My interest initially was fueled by my love of food. I started cooking when I was 11 years old, taught by my Mum and Nan. By the time I was 12 I was cooking the family evening meal at least three times a week when my Mum returned to work. At 14 I was able to cook a Roast Dinner for 6 people and later excelled at school in O’Level Food and Nutrition.
Years later my knowledge of nutrition and cooking skills helped me as a single parent to provide healthy meals for my two children whilst living on a very restricted budget. When I quit smoking 5 years ago my health nose-dived. My immune system hit rock bottom and I suffered from many viral infections. I turned to food to boost my immune system reading about Superfoods. I applied the same principle when I went through early menopause. I was adamant that I did not want to go down the HRT route so research into Phytoestrogens led me to changing my diet to deal with the various menopausal symptoms that I suffered over a period of 8 years.
Nowadays healthy eating is a habit but in my post menopause stage I need to watch my weight in a way that I have never had to before. Again new books and a little research has led me to tweaking my diet and fitness routines to boost fat loss and build lean muscle. Early menopause increases the risk of osteoporosis and as such I need to try to maintain my bone density. This led me to try weight training around 7 years ago and I havent looked back. I have never been a lover of cardio based exercise but weight lifting, resistance based circuits and boxing have really sparked a renewed interest in fitness.
I have used many books and followed a few plans to help maintain my health, weight and fitness and here are a few of my favourites.
